Talk Series in Memory of Dr. Jayanta Sarkar: First Talk by Dr. Pritam Ganguly, ISI Kolkata on September 29, 2026

As a tribute to our late professor Dr. Jayanta Sarkar, we are organising a series of talks in his memory. Some of his close collaborators have kindly agreed to be part of the series and will speak about the work they carried out together with Jayanta.

The schedule of the talks in this series is as follows:

  • September 29, 2026 – Speaker: Dr. Pritam Ganguly, ISI Kolkata
  • October 1, 2026 – Speaker: Dr. Pratyoosh Kumar, IIT Guwahati
  • October 6, 2026 – Speaker: Dr. Muna Naik, IISc Bengaluru

All talks will take place at 4:00 pm in the MSB Harishchandra Seminar Hall. The talks will also be streamed online via Google Meet.

Details of the First Talk

Speaker: Dr. Pritam Ganguly, ISI Kolkata

Title of the Talk: Certainty in Uncertainty: From the Euclidean Space to the Heisenberg Group

Broad Area of Research: Harmonic Analysis

Date: 29 September 2026 (Tuesday)

Time: 4:00–5:00 pm IST

Venue: Harishchandra Seminar Hall and online

Abstract:

Uncertainty principles form a fundamental theme in harmonic analysis, expressing in various ways the impossibility of simultaneous localisation of a function and its Fourier transform. In this talk, we will discuss two manifestations of this principle: the Heisenberg–Pauli–Weyl uncertainty inequality and Ingham's uncertainty principle, which concerns the admissible decay of the Fourier transform of a compactly supported function. The plan is to begin with their classical Euclidean formulations and then move to the setting of the Heisenberg group. The results to be discussed are based on joint work with Jayanta Sarkar. The talk is dedicated to the memory of Jayanta.
