Invitation to the Inauguration of the Mathematical Sciences Block – June 14, 2025

It is our pleasure and privilege to cordially invite you to the inauguration of the building for School of Mathematical Sciences (SoM) on the forenoon of June 14, 2025.

To place in perspective, SoM has been an integral part of our institute since its inception in 2008, alongside three other foundational schools. For the first nine years, the school operated from the first and second floors of the Computer Science Building at the College of Engineering (CET), Thiruvananthapuram. During this initial phase, faculty members and research scholars from all four schools shared a common space, without distinct structural demarcations.

In 2017, the institute moved to its current scenic permanent campus in Vithura. While the Schools of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics started functioning in dedicated buildings, the SoM began operating on the top floor of the Physics Building. Although there has been a plan to construct a dedicated building for the SoM behind the Lecture Hall Complex (LHC), this plan did not materialize due to unforeseen circumstances.

Thanks to the leadership and vision of Prof. J. N. Moorthy, the Director of our institute, a longstanding aspiration has finally come to fruition. Through a thoughtful restructuring of the originally proposed administrative complex, a dedicated building for the SoM has been established. This new building, which adjoins the School of Physics, consists of four floors (G+3) and features approximately 30 faculty offices, a dedicated computer lab, meeting rooms, one lecture hall, and a seminar hall. Additionally, there are office spaces available for 110 PhD students.

We are delighted to announce that Padma Shri Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, former Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, and currently the President of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), has graciously agreed to inaugurate the new building for the SoM. This is a significant occasion for both the students and faculty of the SoM, and the IISER TVM fraternity as a whole. We warmly invite you to join us in celebrating this important milestone, and we would be honored by your visit to the Building and your presence at the inauguration ceremony.

After the inauguration, Prof. Sharma will deliver a public lecture at the Aryabhatta Auditorium in the Lecture Hall Complex. Known for his profound insights and engaging oratory, his talk promises to be both inspiring and memorable, and we would be delighted to have you attend.

We look forward to your participation in this celebration of the historic occasion of the School of Mathematics.
