CMIT | The Divergent Talk Series: talk by Ajin Shaji Jose

We're excited to announce a two-part talk by our alumnus, Ajin Shaji Jose, who will show us how familiar mathematical ideas evolve into deeper structure.

The details of the talk are as follows:
Title: Elementary Introduction to Grassmanians
Time and Date: 10th - 11th January 2026 , 9:30 pm onwards
Venue: 10th January: MSB 410
11th January: CDH 2, Discussion Room
Title: Scaling problems and their applications
Abstract:This will be 2 part talk aimed at undergrads/grads interested in math. In the first session, we will introduce definition of Grassmanian and Schubert varieties, and on the way concepts like manifolds, varieties, exterior products etc. If time permits, historical problems relevant to Schubert Calculus. In the second session, we shall give Schubert's method to solve some classic enumerative geometry problems. Using concepts from first session, we shall try to make some of these methods rigorous. If time permits, we shall say something about the cohomology and probably introduce Grassmanians as a scheme. This talk is meant to be approachable and exploratory, starting from basic ideas many people have seen before and gradually building new language and perspective along the way. The emphasis will be on motivation, examples, and how different areas of math connect. You're welcome to attend one or both parts, whether you're early in your math journey or just curious about where familiar concepts can lead.
